Patriotic

As those of you who have seen the Lincoln County Libertarian Party’s website know, last year we presented a resolution to the County Commissioners urging them to instruct county officials to refuse to comply with the USA PATRIOT Act (about which they did nothing). We also set up a page supporting our claims, which I feel is the best of its kind that I’ve seen.

I was able to get my hands on a recording of my speech to the County Commissioners after the resolution was read to them. Considering it was an off-the-cuff, unscripted speech, and I was just going from notes, I think I did rather well. You can listen to it here (3.4MB mp3 file, 9:40).

Don’t sell out your liberty!

To help raise money for my campaign, I’ve opened up an online shop. There, you can buy bumper stickers to promote my candidacy, Vote Libertarian hats and stickers, and (pictured here) the Presidents Wall Clock. None of these items are available anywhere else! They’re all my original designs. I get a few bucks from each sale which will go to my candidacy. So buy stuff! Don’t sell out your liberties! Support the Libertarian Party and your local candidates.

It’s now official

This morning I filed with the Lincoln County Board of Elections as a candidate for the 2004 Libertarian Primary election for County Commissioner. If I win the primary (which seems likely, since to my knowledge I’m the only Libertarian filing and there are three open slots) then it’s on to the November campaign. I hope to add an Issues page to my website soon, so keep a watch on the left hand side. I plan to skewer my usual target, zoning, and I am also going to have a lot to say about accountability on the Board of Commissioners.

I just can’t make this stuff up!

Man, it seems like government gets more and more ridiculous all the time. According to this story in The Register, a 15-year-old girl was arrested with possession and distribution of child pornography after she she posted naked and sexy pictures of herself to online chat rooms. Most hilariously, she’s also been charged with the sexual abuse of a minor; in other words, she sexually abused herself!

Just like the War on Drugs, government is going to amazing lengths to support its delusions by denying reality. Nothing at all will be done to make any progress in this area until we admit that postpubescent minors are sexual creatures just as adults are and change our policies accordingly.

Hey, anyone wanna take any bets that she’ll be tried as an adult?

Play That Beautiful Music

My stepsister, Fiona McCallister, has released a CD of her beautiful hammered dulcimer music. The hammered dulcimer is a precursor to the piano; a stringed instrument played by striking the strings with hammers. It’s a Persian instrument that became popular throughout Europe starting in the 11th Century. The pieces on this disc are so captivating and soothing, and are mostly from 17th and 18th Centuries, including the more popular pieces “Greensleeves” and “Scarborough Fair,” as well as one original piece she wrote for her daughter. You can hear samples on the CD site. It’s a great thing to listen to when you need to be reminded that there is still beauty in this world.

Why Sylvia Browne Is No Psychic

Sylvia Browne, one of those "Talking to the Dead" hacks, was on Larry King Live last Friday and I just had to share one of the calls with you. If any of you had any doubts remaining that these people aren’t doing what they claim, let this put them to rest. Listen for yourself (212K mp3 file).

Her, John Edward, James Van Praagh, and all of those other "psychics" are just preying on the grieving and the vulnerable. Their techniques are that of cold reading, and it’s not even good cold reading. I’ve seen stage magicians, who admit that it’s just a trick, do the exact same thing with a skill that puts these people to shame. You may be grieving, but you don’t have to be vulnerable. Protect yourself and your loved ones from these frauds.

I’m walkin’, yes indeed…

I will be participating in the 2003 CROP Walk in Lincolnton on October 19. Click here if you’d like to make an online donation.

The CROP (Communities Reaching Out to People) Walk is a 10-km walk to raise money to fight hunger and for disaster relief. 25% of the money raised goes directly to local communities. Only about 8% is lost to administrative overhead and 10% to fundraising expenses.

Glutton for punishment

Well, I’m doing it again! I’m throwing my hat into the ring for another bid for Lincoln County Commissioner. Note the addition of the Donate button on the left. All donations will be appreciated, but the law is I have to collect full contact information–including Occupation and Employer–for anyone who donates more than $100 in an election cycle, so please provide that information if you end up donating more than that amount. I may also stop accepting donations if I reach $3,000.

None of this is officially official until the filing next February, but I’m going to go ahead and start campaigning now, even though I have no idea who else will be running (apart from my friend and partner, Richard Hicks, who’s also making another go for it).
