Think of the Children

There’s been a lot of to-do in Charlotte about the speeding scameras. I normally don’t comment on Charlotte issues, since I don’t live there and haven’t worked there in a couple of years. But something about this issue was just too irresistable.

See, the profit-mongers in Charlotte GovCo swear up and down that the new speeding cameras, to become operational next month, aren’t a revenue generation method…but then they turn around and say that the revenues generated will go to the school system. People like that are just begging to be made fun of. So here’s a mock commercial touting the benefits of the speeding cameras (1MB mp3 file).

Patriotic

As those of you who have seen the Lincoln County Libertarian Party’s website know, last year we presented a resolution to the County Commissioners urging them to instruct county officials to refuse to comply with the USA PATRIOT Act (about which they did nothing). We also set up a page supporting our claims, which I feel is the best of its kind that I’ve seen.

I was able to get my hands on a recording of my speech to the County Commissioners after the resolution was read to them. Considering it was an off-the-cuff, unscripted speech, and I was just going from notes, I think I did rather well. You can listen to it here (3.4MB mp3 file, 9:40).

Don’t sell out your liberty!

To help raise money for my campaign, I’ve opened up an online shop. There, you can buy bumper stickers to promote my candidacy, Vote Libertarian hats and stickers, and (pictured here) the Presidents Wall Clock. None of these items are available anywhere else! They’re all my original designs. I get a few bucks from each sale which will go to my candidacy. So buy stuff! Don’t sell out your liberties! Support the Libertarian Party and your local candidates.

It’s now official

This morning I filed with the Lincoln County Board of Elections as a candidate for the 2004 Libertarian Primary election for County Commissioner. If I win the primary (which seems likely, since to my knowledge I’m the only Libertarian filing and there are three open slots) then it’s on to the November campaign. I hope to add an Issues page to my website soon, so keep a watch on the left hand side. I plan to skewer my usual target, zoning, and I am also going to have a lot to say about accountability on the Board of Commissioners.

I just can’t make this stuff up!

Man, it seems like government gets more and more ridiculous all the time. According to this story in The Register, a 15-year-old girl was arrested with possession and distribution of child pornography after she she posted naked and sexy pictures of herself to online chat rooms. Most hilariously, she’s also been charged with the sexual abuse of a minor; in other words, she sexually abused herself!

Just like the War on Drugs, government is going to amazing lengths to support its delusions by denying reality. Nothing at all will be done to make any progress in this area until we admit that postpubescent minors are sexual creatures just as adults are and change our policies accordingly.

Hey, anyone wanna take any bets that she’ll be tried as an adult?

Glutton for punishment

Well, I’m doing it again! I’m throwing my hat into the ring for another bid for Lincoln County Commissioner. Note the addition of the Donate button on the left. All donations will be appreciated, but the law is I have to collect full contact information–including Occupation and Employer–for anyone who donates more than $100 in an election cycle, so please provide that information if you end up donating more than that amount. I may also stop accepting donations if I reach $3,000.

None of this is officially official until the filing next February, but I’m going to go ahead and start campaigning now, even though I have no idea who else will be running (apart from my friend and partner, Richard Hicks, who’s also making another go for it).

Dem compooters blow up reel good!

Senator Orrin Hatch has advocated "damaging" the PCs of users who illegally trade MP3s online, saying that "may be the only way you can teach them about copyrights." Well, there’s really no way you can physically damage a computer from across the wire, but you can delete and/or corrupt their files. One good question is: Whatever happened to due process, to being innocent until proven guilty?

My response is, if they can do that, then can we likewise damage the PCs of politicians who routinely violate the Constitution they swore an oath to uphold and defend? After all, that may be the only way you can teach politicians about the Constitution. Hey, what’s good for the goose…

Liberating North Carolina

As amazing as it might seem, sometimes politicians can be persuaded to do the right thing. The NC House has introduced H867, the Electoral Fairness Act. John Blust is the sponsor, and ten other house members have joined as co-sponsors. This bill will reduce NC’s prohibitive ballot access requirements to the national average, meaning that if the bill passes the Libertarian Party will no longer have to bankrupt itself every four years to stay on the ballot, and other minor parties may actually be given a voice.

It’s not everything I’d like to see happen; I’d like to see the state be forced to count write-in votes without the write-in candidate having had to qualify, and I’d like to see all parties be given a choice whether to have a primary or to nominate in convention (thereby avoiding the filing fees), and it would be nice if a party has to re-petition to get on the ballot that their members won’t all revert to "Unaffiliated" status. But it’s a start! If you’re a North Carolina voter, I urge you to write your representative in Raleigh and tell them to support this bill.
